Yamantaka means destroyer of Yama. Who is Yama? There are three Yamas - outer, inner and secret. The outer Yama is death, represented by the Lord of Death, together with all the external obstacles and hindrances to our Dharma practice. The inner Yama is our karma and afflictive emotions that comprise the inner obstacles to our Dharma practice. The secret Yama is the the subtle conceptions of the white appearance, red increase and black near-attainment, that are the subtle obscurations to enlightenment. Yamantaka desttorys all three Yamas. At the secret level, Yamantaka is the mind of clear light. - AndyWistreich
